Method To Make English Precis In Css/pms Exams

BREVITY IS THE SOUL OF THE WIT

Precis means a summary or abstract of a text. Precis is a technique to evaluate a given passage and make a brief/synopsis of it not exceeding 1/3 of the original. A well structured and topic-centered precis adds charm to one,s writing. Precis is an art that requires skills and constant practice.

In each competitive examinations like CSS & PMS/PCS , paper of English( Precis & Composition) comprises one question related to precis making. Candidates who prepare well, feel happy to attempt that question as it is called mark securing question. Precis is not a hard nut to crack. While making precis in examination bear in mind the following points;

     Precis questions must be attempted at first or at the last. This stratagem would save enough time for other questions.

First of all made the first reading of the passage. Underline difficult/hidden words. These words are keywords.

      Recall  meaning of underlined words.

    Go to second reading. Translate each sentence in your mind.  This would provoke your dormant memory.

Go to third reading and trace the central idea/theme of the passage. That,s also your title of the precis.

      After these steps write a draft of precis at the side of the sheet by marking as Rough Work. (Later on,  don’t forget to cross it).

      Read your draft and count words. Try to delete  redundant words.

Once more read your draft vigilantly and analyze it with the original passage. If you consider that   your piece of writing contains the same concept/idea, then it is your final precis.

      Write it as fair precis with a title.

This process should not consume more than 20-25 minutes.
